Another Pin-tested Recipe: “Healthy” Wendy’s Frosty

OK, so technically this isn’t a recipe from Pinterest. Well, variations are pinned all over the place, but that is not where I found it. I found it while indulging in one of my guilty mobile-reading-to-kill-time-pleasures: Buzzfeed. I took a screen shot to remind myself to make this “healthy” Wendy’s Frosty recipe later because, “Hey! I have all of those ingredients!” And really, who doesn’t love a Frosty? But then I forgot about it until I recently went through my photos to make more room on my phone (as previously discussed, I’m still rocking an iPhone 4, 8 gig).

Healthy Wendy's Frosty Idea

I decided today would be a great day to make a nice, ice cold “frosty” considering it’s kind of cold out. We are currently experiencing a 24 hour Florida “cold front” of a frigid 72 degrees. It’s even overcast and spitting light rain drops. This really is as close to winter as we get!

Florida Winter

The puffy sweaters and Uggs come out and everyone orders a chai tea latte. What better day to make a frosty? Right? (Wait. I must clarify for the record; I do not own Uggs. Nor did I wear a sweater today! I’m just saying.. it’s those damn kids these days!)

So, I went back to Buzzfeed to find this article in its entirety and OF COURSE, it’s gone. I even abandoned my mobile and got on a real, actual computer and found Buzzfeed’s actual website, not just an app! I searched the site for “Healthy Frosty”, “Wendy’s”, “Wendy’s Frosty” and got no hits. I did find this though! God, I love the internet.

Frosty Proposal Fail

I then hopped over to Pinterest assuming I’d find the recipe there. One search yielded over 100 results and after browsing a few I realized they were all different. Screw it, I said! I have the ingredient list, just not the measurements. I worked at Jamba Juice for 8 whole months in college, surely I can wing this one.

Anyway, here it is. The homemade, healthy version of the ever loved Wendy’s Frosty. Presented in collage form, of course. An obvious favorite of mine.

First, the ingredients: almond milk, banana, cocoa powder, vanilla and crushed ice.

The steps: measure(ish), and blend. I added roughly 2 cups crushed ice, 3/4 cup almond milk, 1/2 tsp vanilla, 1 tbsp cocoa powder and 1/2 a banana. Then, NINJA BLEND!

Finally: evaluate and taste… Clearly darker than the real thing. Tastes…. NOT GOOD. Bland and gross. Like banana water with a side of bitter chocolate.

Verdict: NO.

I remembered when briefly browsing the plethora of Pinterest versions of this recipe that some  added protein powder. Well, thanks to Mr. Crossfit hubby, I just happen to have a GINORMOUS vat of that crap. So I added about 1/2 a scoop, a bit more almond milk and cocoa and then re-blended.

Round 2 verdict:

Ehh. It’s OK, but this tastes nothing like a damn Frosty. NOTHING. In fact, after tasting the final product and with full hindsight bias, this is clearly just a protein shake. Nothing special about that. Still, it *is* far healthier than a Frosty. My homemade Frosty is probably about the size of a Wendy’s large. According to their website, a large Original Chocolate Frosty will set you back 590 calories, and will add 15 grams of total fat to your gut, with 10 grams being saturated fats. Impressively and unexpectedly though, it also has 17 freakin grams of protein. Didn’t see that one coming.

Because I am lazy, not a scientist, and surely didn’t legitimately measure a damn thing with my recipe, here is my *estimate* of the calories, fats and protein my Frosty/really-just-a-protein-shake contains: 143 calories, 1.7g total fat, 0g saturated fat, and 13.5g of protein.

Clearly my version is much healthier. But also clearly, my version isn’t a Frosty at all. It’s a damn protein shake and nothing else.

So, while it is healthy and tasty enough, it in no way resembles a Wendy’s Frosty, as claimed. Therefore I grant this recipe a rating of: NOPE. Won’t make again.
