Constipation? Don’t Get Stuck… Fix Your Digestion!

It’s time to get it out… (the conversation that is!)

Did you know constipation affects 25% of Americans and every year over $725 million is spent on laxatives?

That is a lot of money, and a lot of stopped-up people!

Constipation is what happens when your normal “poo-routine” slows down or stops and you are left feeling bloated, crampy, uncomfortable, and even nauseous. When you do finally go – it’s usually rather painful as your stool has changed to a harder consistency. Over time, this can cause more serious issues including anal fissures, hemorrhoids, polyps and an increased risk for colon cancer.

Additionally, when constipated, your entire digestive system actually slows down, not just your colon. As a result your body absorbs less nutrients, struggles to stay hydrated, and becomes weak and tired.

What causes constipation?colon cleanse

Constipation occurs when there is a change in your regular diet and digestion pattern. While many things can affect the sensitive process of digestion, the main culprits are:

 

  • A change in type of foods you eat and/or quantity of food consumed
  • Decrease in your activity level
  • Eating a lot of dairy products
  • Not enough water in your diet
  • Not enough fiber in your diet
  • Overuse of laxatives
  • Some medications (specifically narcotics, antidepressants, or iron pills)
  • Stress

Constipation Solutions

It may come as a surprise to you, but we don’t recommended simply relying on laxatives to get your smooth moves back. Laxatives often cause a lot of awful cramping, diarrhea, and digestive discomfort. We don’t consider this a solution as it does nothing to address the root cause of the constipation and solve the problem once and for all.

Instead of treating each case of constipation with painful laxatives, try making a few simple changes that will fix the problem causing constipation in the first place:

  • You need to stay hydrated. Drink an additional 2 glasses of room temperature water a day.
  • Along with that necessary hydration, you need to add a daily oral colon cleanse that helps relieve the pain of constipation while also flushing out toxins and irritants as well as encouraging a better functioning digestive tract.
  • Add fiber from fruits, veggies, prunes and bran cereal to your diet. The fiber in these foods helps your body absorb all the water needed from your large intestine and then efficiently pass your stool.
  • Cut back on diary as it is a known contributor to constipation, even for those who are not lactose intolerant.
  • Avoid caffeine as it can cause dehydration which contributes to constipation in an unbalanced digestive tract.
  • Finally, if needed, take an over the counter stool softener (not a laxative) to help soften your backed up stool and make it less painful to pass.

With 1 in 4 people suffering from constipation, it’s safe to say this is a common ailment. However, common doesn’t mean you have to settle for suffering when it strikes you. Constipation is brought on by a few simple and general life changes and can just as easily be cured with a little knowledge and routine tweaking – both of which you now have.
