Gluten Sensitivity? Who, what, huh?

By on 01/15/2015

So I have discovered something pretty interesting in the last few months which I wanted to share with all of you. I recently completed a gluten and dairy free detox that did wonders for my body and mind. The first thing I noticed was my mind fogginess had disappeared and I have become much more active and energetic. Earlier last month, I went to see a herbalist who specializes in …..herbs and along with providing me with some hardy herbs to take daily for a general energy boost, he also asked me to go on a gluten and dairy free diet.   I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking who on God’s green earth can go without cheese and bread for 30 days??? I decided to stick to this endeavor because I like to be extreme when I want to see fast results and let me tell you, it was HARD! I initially went to see him to talk about my irritability, fatigue and extreme lack of energy. He told me to try this detox as a trial to see how I would feel. When you take out dairy and gluten from your diet, you realize you are pretty much eating rabbit food along with a tiny strip of protein every day. I was skeptical. “This isn’t gonna do anything” I remember thinking to myself but I was very wrong. It made a world of difference. After two weeks of suffering and whining, I woke up with mental clarity that I haven’t experienced before. It was like I was living with a fogginess and lack of focus all this time and didn’t realize it until it was gone. I also noticed that my bloating and irritability were non-existent. I decided to do some research on gluten because like many of you I am sure, I have heard about its negative effects and how everyone is going on gluten-free diets. I will write a blog later on about the dangers of dairy intake as I don’t want to thoroughly disappoint everyone all in one blog.

Before I start listing different symptoms gluten can be responsible for and how I may or may not be gluten sensitive, I just want you to know that you should not change anything in your diet without first discussing with a healthcare professional. They will be able to administer the proper examinations and blood tests to help you figure out what your body really needs, so basically please don’t diagnose yourself.

Also if you know you are gluten sensitive, talk to your doctor about 21thindown, which is a dietary supplement with a “gluten block”. Essentially GlutenBlock™ allows people with gluten intolerance to eat gluten-containing foods and not suffer the nasty side effects. Dr. Marianne Beck who is an advocate of 21thindown says “For those of us who are sensitive or intolerant, eating anything that contains gluten causes inflammation in the intestines and atrophy of the villi lining the intestines that are responsible for absorbing nutrients. This causes your body to be unable to absorb essential nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates and fats from the food you eat and the supplements you take. If your body cannot absorb these critical nutrients, it will not function properly.” So, do you want to know what I found out about the dangers of gluten? See below because everyone should at least be aware:

Recent studies have shown that numerous “diseases” can be caused by gluten:*

·         irritable bowel disease

·         anemia

·         cancer

·         fatigue

·         rheumatoid arthritis

·         multiple sclerosis

·         anxiety & depression

·         dementia

·         migraines

·         epilepsy

·         nerve damage

·         obesity

So I ask myself am I gluten sensitive? Do I just feel better because I was eating healthier in general? Or do I now live on a gluten-free diet for the rest of my life? All I know is that I feel better and that means something is going right.

To find out more, do yourself a favor and dig deeper. Go see your doctor and get tested. Please note that gluten sensitivity is intolerance to gluten rather than a wheat allergy, and is NOT the same as Celiac disease which is a genetic autoimmune disorder of the small intestine.
