Melatonin for Managing Sleep and Weight Loss?

Melatonin has been one of the most popular natural sleep aid supplements for a long time now, and for good reason: it works! But did you know that emerging research is showing that melatonin can also aid in weight loss?

Melatonin is a hormone that our bodies naturally produce and release (via the pineal gland) at nighttime to initiate the sleeping process; it is also the only hormone available as a supplement in the US without a prescription.

A study published in the Journal of Pineal Research revealed that melatonin actually triggers the production of a special kind of body fat that helps burn more calories!

(If you didn’t know, there are two kinds of fat in your body: white fat and brown fat. White fat is the bad fat that leads to health problems and weight gain, brown fat, however, actually burns more calories than it stores and aids in weight loss!)

After feeding one group of rats with regular water and another group with water containing melatonin, researchers discovered that the rats drinking the melatonin enriched water had far more brown fat than the other rats, even though both were fed the same exact food diets.

Researchers believe melatonin actually helps weight loss in 2 ways: It creates more brown fat, but also helps transform some detrimental white fat into calorie burning brown fat.

New studies are now underway to see if, as suspected, melatonin supplements can also be useful in safely treating type 2 diabetes, metabolic disorders and blood pressure.
