My First Rant! Johnson & Johnson: A Freaking Evil Corporation

First, let me start out by saying I am usually quite passive. I am also well aware of what it means to “start crap” on the internet. So, for everyone’s sake I will try my best to keep this rant short and PC…ish.

Before Seb was born (August 23, 2011), like all internet nerdy soon-to-be-moms, I read copious amounts of all things baby to learn how to actually like, keep said baby alive. One thing I unexpectedly learned that really surprised and disappointed me was the fact that Johnson & Johnson’s baby shampoo, a damn near childhood icon of mine, actually contains 2 chemicals: quaternium-15 and 1,4-dioxane, which have both been declared known carcinogens. When confronted with this, Johnson & Johnson just sort of shrugged and said they were slowly “reducing” the amounts. Here’s the rub though, THEY ALREADY MAKE BABY SHAMPOO THAT DOES NOT CONTAIN THESE CHEMICALS BECAUSE OTHER COUNTRIES DO NOT ALLOW THEM (COME ON FDA, REALLY?!?!) AND THEREFORE TO SELL THEIR CRAP IN MOST OTHER COUNTRIES J&J HAD TO MAKE A NEW FORMULA….BUT THEY STILL DIDN’T SELL THAT ONE IN THE U.S. AND STUCK WITH THEIR CARCINOGENIC BABY SHAMPOO OF DOOM.

(Internet overlords, you can email the award for longest caps lock screamy rant to

They have since released a “Naturals” shampoo that does not contain these chemicals, BUT STILL SELL THE ORIGINAL FORMULA IN THE ORIGINAL SHAMPOO.

OK, I said I was going to keep this short, so if you want to read more about the multi-year long campaign against the shampoo, the independent lab tests that show the risks, and J&J’s “meh” response, here is a good article (from 2011, because remember, this is back when I was first learning this while prepping for the arrival of Seb). A more recent article from Scientific American says they are now finally STARTING to clean up their shampoo, in 2013… years later.

So this was the news I learned 2ish years ago and as a result have just decided to avoid all of their products whenever possible. For health reasons, yes, but also because screw them! They don’t get my money for crappy behavior like that!

*Side note for any curious readers: I use Shea Moisture Baby Head-to-Toe Wash & Shampoo for Seb and not only is it WONDERFUL on his very sensitive skin, it also smells like heaven.

Surprised Red Fish is very surprised!

“So, like, Anna… this is interesting and all, but do you think something you learned 2 years ago is sort of outside the statute of limitations for bloggable content?”

Because last night hubby and I were watching John Stewart for the first time in ages, and do you know what he reported on? “In one of the largest health care fraud settlements in U.S. history, Johnson & Johnson will pay $2.2 billion to end civil and criminal investigations into kickbacks to pharmacists and the marketing of pharmaceuticals for off-label uses, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said on Monday.”  (Taken from this report).

The short story? They BRIBED doctors and other medical providers to use their UNPROVEN and UNAPPROVED drug Rispersdal on mentally unwell adults, oh and also, on BABIES, and also also, THE ELDERLY.

I really can’t go on the rant I want to about how fucked up this is – that they are doing it, that other corporations do it, that its not covered well in the media, that no one will be going to jail and that all they have to do is pay a large sum of money to the government to have this whole thing basically forgiven! And even worse, while they’ve paid a $2.2 billion dollar fine, Rispersdal earned them $4.2 billion in sales in 2006 alone. That fine was a mere wrist slap!

As Mr. Stewart put it, “You’re not even allowed to do that in ‘Grand Theft Auto.’”

For shame, Johnson & Johnson. For Shame!

(If you need me I’ll be hunkered down under my desk hiding from the hired assassin lawyer ninjas that are sure to find me the second I hit publish. God forbid the truth gets told. Thankfully our legal system has enough loopholes to contain nearly any truthy internet shenanigans! Must maintain public image and protect quarterly profits!)

About Anna

Hi there! This is my little blog project where I am trying to learn more about health, wellness and living a balanced life, while also sharing a bit of my silly side as well. By "silly" I mean sarcastic. And by "a bit" I mean way too much. Sorry about that.♥ - Anna
