The Ultimate List of Health Benefits from Tea

By on 03/16/2016

Tea has pretty much been used since the dawn of time by most cultures as a foundation for good health and wellness, as well as a daily beverage of choice due to its popularity, availability and of course, deliciousness!

Thanks to modern day science, we now know WHY tea is so very beneficial to our health in so many different ways.

But, before we breakdown its many health benefits, lets do a quick lesson in tea…

There are 4 basic kinds of natural, healthy tea: green, black, white, and oolong. They are all derived from the Camellia sinensis plant and have all been verified as health promoting super teas!

Be warned however, that there are many other “teas” on the market that are not from this plant, and are not one of the 4 core tea types, like herbal teas that come from flowers. There are also many processed, artificially flavored, and enhanced tea products that contain chemicals, sweeteners, and additional additives. They may taste good, but they DO NOT hold the same health benefits as pure tea.

In short: Only drink green, black, white, and oolong teas!health benefits of tea

Why should you drink tea daily?

…Because it:

  • Fights inflammation
    • Green tea contains inflammation fighting phytochemicals that work to preserve joints longer as well as reverse the other negative affects of processed sugars and foods on our body.
  • Fights cancer, heart disease, diabetes and more
    • Tea has a high level of oxygen radical absorbance capacity. This basically means it is very good at destroying free radicals – which can wreak havoc on your body and destroy it at a cellular level, increasing the risk for cancer, heart disease, diabetes and other health issues. Additionally, green tea (and green tea extract) contains polyphenols and polysaccharides, which have been shown to lower blood sugar in lab studies.
  • Increases metabolism/fat burning/energy
    • Catechins (found in green tea) actually help boost the body’s metabolism, which burns more calories and increases energy levels. Tea also increases hydration levels, which is another necessity for long term fat burning potential. In fact, a recent study showed that participants who regularly consumed hot tea actually had a lower waist circumference and lower BMI than participants who did not consume tea!
  • Contains powerful antioxidants
    • Tea contains a large amount polyphenols, catechins and phytochemicals, especially the black and green tea varieties.
  • Relieves stress and helps you sleep
    • Tea contains two chemical compounds: tannin and theanine, which have a natural calming effect on the body.
  • Helps control blood pressure
    • A study of Chinese tea drinkers revealed that drinking at least half a cup of green and/or oolong teas daily can reduce blood pressure by up to 50%.

In fact, there are no known downsides to tea. It isn’t calorie dense, it doesn’t contain any harmful ingredients or chemicals, and it is 100% natural. The only side-effect to too much tea is extra hydration, which is not a bad thing at all!

If you are not currently a tea drinker, consider adding it to your daily routine. The caffeine content of tea can easily act as a healthy alternative to your daily coffee! Black and green tea have the highest caffeine amount, but oolong and white tea still contain some caffeine as well. Just like coffee, tea can also be enjoyed hot or cold as well.

You can also spice up your tea by adding a splash of milk, a squeeze of lemon, mint leaves, honey or a dash of cinnamon. Each of these garnishes also contain health benefits of their own!
